CHAPTER TWENTY

“Is someone going to tell me what’s going on?” I asked cautiously.

Jack looked at me as if realizing I was still in the room for the first time. He walked over, took the seat next to me, and then took my hand. Drake took the other one. There are no words that would even remotely touch on the impact my body had when those two held my hands. The closest thing to it would be to say it was like a bolt of erotic lightning surged through me.

I visibly shuddered. Jack released my hand. Drake did not.

“I want you to tell me all about this boy, Mark,” Jack said firmly.

“Why don’t you like him?” I asked again.

“How did you meet him?” Drake interjected.

“He’s always been around for as far back as I can remember. We grew up together,” I replied. “I don’t understand. I told you I was engaged...”

“His mother… what’s she like?” Jack continued.

“I don’t know, really. I rarely see her,” I said thoughtfully. “Mark is mostly over here. She calls Aunt Jenny on the phone a lot, but hardly comes over.”

“Is Mark her natural son?” Drake asked boldly.

My eyes flew open at his astuteness.

“He’s adopted, like me,” I said with surprise. I looked Jack in the eye and then continued, “In fact, there are so many similarities in our circumstances it’s uncanny. His mother is also not married and they moved here only a six months after we did. They live just down the road. Our lands border each other. If you’ve been watching me, I’m surprised you didn’t notice him.” After another lengthy silence I tried again, “Why don’t you like him?”

“I knew you had the boy next door coming around. I just didn’t.... He never tried to have sex with you?” Jack blurted out.

“You of all people know better,” I spat.

“Why is that?” Jack continued. “Aren’t you engaged?”

“Well, Mr. It’s-None-Of-Your-Business…unlike someone else I know, Mark wanted to keep it special and wait until our wedding night,” I replied in a huff.

Pow! That nailed him right in the heart. I smiled to myself as I watched him struggle to hide his reaction to my slam from Drake and me. Drake didn’t take such pains to hide his surprise at my cutting comment. He lifted an eyebrow and shook his head.

“It’s hard to believe the man never laid a hand on you, princess,” Drake said softly. “Even in your pre-development stage, you were a rare beauty.”

I almost cried at his gentle complement until I looked at Jack and the anger rose again. So, for Jack’s benefit, more than anything else, I told the truth; hoping I’d hit my mark just one more time.

“I never said he didn’t touch me,” I confessed. “I just said he didn’t take my virginity.”

Bam! Oh yes… that remark hit its mark just fine. In fact, it brought the jealous dragon to life in Drake as well. Feeling I needed to say something to tone down the fiery sparks of hatred and jealousy
